Chapter Eleven

Raven

I hated the way Baby looked. We’d gone out and smeared some dirt on our hands, our faces; she was now officially so disgusting that we both were gritting our teeth through the next half hour until Leo and Jake got home, so we could get our little performance over with. I reached out and made her hold my hand again, locking my shield down tight; I’d accidentally prodded her memories earlier and run up against a very startling close-up of Hunter’s very startling ab muscles and didn’t want it to happen again. I was a little less mystified with her fascination, though, although I knew I needed to throw that thought down the deepest pit in the back of my mind before I ever let Jake see it.

“It’s not that bad,” she said, shaking my wrist. “And it’s not for very long.”

“Eh,” I said, eyeing her. I didn’t want to get in to how she smelled, or the fact that a mere week ago she would have set herself on fire before she allowed the world to ever conceive of a reality in which she wasn’t absolutely perfect. My sister, the cheerleader. She gave me a quick half-smile, preparing herself to act the gutted girlfriend—or whatever the hell she was—once more before going upstairs and hosing all that filth off. All the bad memories, too. She still hadn’t had a shower since… Since that.

It won’t matter, she told me, shocking me so badly my mouth hung open. A shower isn’t going to fix it either.

Jesus, Baby! Have you been sitting there, listening to everything the whole time?

“No,” she said, grinning at me, her eyes flashing with their usual mischief. They darkened again after a second. “No, but… I think when you’re thinking about me it kind of… It almost invites me in. Whatever ‘it’ is—your magic? Your memories?” She twisted her face, mulling it over. “Your big fat brain?”

“I’ll show you what a big fat brain can do—” I started to tickle her, then stopped short when the dull horror of my threat sunk down inside of me. I had done that. Just a little while ago. And now—

“And now it’s over,” she said. “It’s done.”

I shivered, and she wrapped her arm around my shoulders. Baby was over it; she didn’t dwell, not like I did. It was exactly the cure I needed some days, but this… I needed to remember that I’d killed Hunter. That my magic had made something so terrible, so impossible to believe possible happen that it took me completely by surprise. I’d killed him by raising my hand.

“Well, that’s not exactly true,” Baby murmured, still holding me tight; I scowled up at her. “What? You killed him with your brain, not your hand.” She rolled her eyes at me, as if we were disagreeing about whether or not a movie was better than the book, or some other innocuous argument— “No I’m not,” Baby said, cutting me off. “I would never have an argument with you about a book, Raven, I’m not an idiot.
